This yearâ??s concert, conducted by George Ellis, celebrates the music of iconic Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, best known for his theme to Zorba the Greek. His work, both classical and popular, draws on the rich musical heritage of his homeland.
Mezzosoprano Livia Brash and baritone Hayden Barrington combine with Sydney Philharmonia Choir to perform Theodorakisâ?? vibrant oratorio, Canto General. Performed in Spanish and based on Chilean Nobel-laureate Pablo Nerudaâ??s book of poems, Canto General is an epic history of South America.
The tempo rises in the concertâ??s second half as special guest, Greek vocalist Dimitris Basis performs laika tragoudia â?“ â??popular songsâ?? by Theodorakis, celebrating life and love.
